About Chrishall
A small village with a foot in three counties, Chrishall is situated in north west Essex, closely bordering Hertfordshire and South Cambridgeshire.
Chrishall is the birthplace of Queen Matilda, the wife of King Stephen, England’s ruler in the first English Civil war of the 1100’s, a time known as the Anarchy. The manor house where she grew up, named Flanders, was eventually knocked down and a newer one erected in its place, which local historians believe may be Chiswick Hall.
Though relatively isolated in the countryside and its population of around 500 largely unchanged for centuries, the village still boasts an infant and junior school, recreational grounds and two churches.
