About Fowlmere
Fowlmere village is located in the South Cambridgeshire countryside, 6 miles north-east of Royston and close by the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. It is recorded in Domesday Book by the wonderfully unusual title of ‘Fugelesmare’.
It is best known for being the location for a large RSPB nature reserve and for its award-winning public house, The Chequers. The imposing Church of St Mary’s sits on a rise nearby this pub, with parts of its structure dating back to Norman times.
The airfield on the edge of the village was a former base for the 339th Fighter Group during World War II.
