About Bassingbourn
The village of Bassingbourn near Royston has grown up into an unusual rectangular shape, most probably because of its being bordered by an ancient field-way (which divides it from its near neighbouring village, Litlington) and the brook formerly known as the Fen.
Bassingbourn means ‘the stream of Bassa’s folk’, which could indicate that there was an early English settlement here in the past. Now it is mostly associated with its military barracks, located on the A1198 on the village borders. It also has its own Village College as well as shops and two public houses (The Hoops and The Pear Tree).
