COVID-19 SHOULD MAKE US RE-THINK OUR ATTITUDE TO CLEANERS
So we find ourselves living in unprecedented times where some workers have found themselves left out in the cold. No wages coming in and no idea what to do about it!
We are proud, therefore, that at Email Mum we’ve built a business model that allowed us to give our employees some protection and to act ahead of the government guidelines, and do what we believed to be morally right and the safest thing for all our clients and staff.
Even though we have suspended trading, we are utilising all the help packages we can to make sure that our employees are all able to benefit.
Email Mum was created with a set of moral ethics and transparency at its heart, which is what makes us different from an agency. Agencies who simply match the cleaner to a job and leave them to be self employed without any management, PAYE protection or pension package have left these workers open to not receiving any income until at least the end of June, as per the current government help package. At the time of writing this article, that is 14 weeks away! How can any average person survive without any income or access to government benefits such as the Job Retention Scheme for that amount of time? For an industry worth 4.7 billion pounds a year, this cannot be right.
We at Email Mum strongly believe that we have an opportunity here to set a new standard and way of thinking across the whole of the Domestic Cleaning industry, and hope that in trying to spread the message of companies and clients only employing cleaners and housekeepers with access to proper employment packages, we can avoid anything like this ever happening again within this sector of the working community.
