About Royston

Royston is a small market town on the borders of two counties, Cambridgeshire and North Herts. Its name is reputedly derived from the lady who placed a stone cross at the meeting of the two great Roman roads that run through the town.

Royston is steeped in history, having played host to kings and famous characters in the past, and it still holds one of Europe’s great mysteries; a rare cave of carvings, which some believe to have links with the Templar Order. There was once an Augustinian priory in the town, which spawned two charitable hospitals.

King James I built a hunting lodge here so that he could enjoy sport on the nearby heathlands. With its ideal location for travellers, Royston was a popular resting site on the Great North and London Roads, resulting in a roaring trade for inns and coaching houses for centuries.

Despite its ever-increasing population, Royston has lost quite a few of its amenities in recent years, such as the Priory Cinema and the Green Plunge open-air swimming pool. It does have an indoor leisure centre, a historic town hall and museum, shopping centre, the Priory Park and a range of sporting clubs and facilities as well as schools, surgeries and dental practices. There has been a market in the town since it was granted a charter by King Richard I.
