About Duddenhoe End

Perched on Champion Hill of the East Anglian heights, roughly 410ft above sea level, Duddenhoe End is a small north-west Essex village between the ancient market towns of Royston and Saffron Walden. In 1066, it was recorded that the manor of Duddas Hall was held by the Saxon Dudda, Earl of Wessex, but the name was changed to Duddenhoe Grange by Tilty Abbey when granted to their abbots. The local clay found hereabouts was favoured by the Anglo-Flemish wool trade, for making black dye. The green known as Bridge Green took its name from Thomas le Bruges, ‘the champion’, in 1273, whose family named the hill Champion after him. During the 17th Century, ‘the green’ became Duddenhoe End, with thatched cottages being erected on both sides of the road.

There are about 100 properties in the village today. There is also a village hall and a thatched church, converted from a barn in the late 19th Century, but no shops or pubs. However, Duddenhoe End does have its own drinking society, known as ‘Dudds’, to encourage community interaction and socialising. This group’s activities include quizzing and trips to restaurants as well as visits to ‘drinking holes’.
