About Ickleton
This South Cambridgeshire village of around 300 souls is home to the Wellcome Trust Genome campus, who took over the 18th Century red-brick Hinxton Hall and its 95-acre estate on the riverbank in 1992 for its pioneering project work.
Situated 5 miles north-west of Saffron Walden and 9 miles south of Cambridge with the River Cam running through its heart, Hinxton was originally known as ‘Hengestetun’, meaning ‘the town of Hengest’, which suggests an ancient settlement site. The present Hinxton Mill was constructed in the 18th Century but the site of the mill was mentioned as far back as the Domesday records. The parish church of St Mary and St John is a medieval flint and rubble building representing early English architectural style. The Red Lion Public House, still a popular inn today, dates back to the 17th Century.
