About Newport

Newport is a large village near Saffron Walden, with a population of just over 2000. Situated amongst the northern Essex arable fields, it boasts regular train services to London Liverpool Street, which helps keep its community thriving and variable.

Newport represents the centre point of the long distance path, the Harcamlow Way, a figure of eight walk stretching between Cambridge and Harlow. The village is mentioned in Domesday Book, and prospered until around the turn of the fourteenth century, when its near neighbour Saffron Walden eclipsed it in importance. It still retains many of its original buildings through the ages. St Mary the Virgin Church dates back to the 14th Century, Monks Barn – a Wealden style house – originally built in the 15th Century.

The village boasts two pubs; the Coach and Horses, a large 17th Century inn, and The White Horse, an equally old though smaller establishment in the village centre. The Crown House, a timber-framed former inn dating from the 15th Century, was also known as The King’s Head; local legend has it that Nell Gwynne, the infamous mistress of King Charles II, stayed here for assignations with her royal lover when he was staying at the nearby Audley End estate.

Newport is also known for its Free Grammar School, founded in 1588 by Dame Joyce Frankland. Recent famous pupils include TV chef Jamie Oliver and footballer Matt Holland.
