About Langley

This tiny village is a great example of what can happen when natural landscape meets modern travel needs; the long winding road that splits the village green into Upper and Lower gives Langley a unique appearance and also makes for interesting games of cricket! The village has a strong rural location and atmosphere, which meant that its population was slow to grow until the 1980’s, particularly since electricity didn’t arrive here until 1950. Langley currently boasts a population of around 1050, and community spirit is fostered by such events as its annual fair, its cricket and football teams and meeting place of The Bull pub.

The name Langley is Anglo-Saxon in origin, meaning ‘long clearing in woodland’. There is surviving evidence of a small Norman church in the present 14th Century building. The present Langley Hall adjoining the churchyard dates back to the early 17th Century. The village has always had close links with nearby Clavering.
