About Duxford

Situated 10 miles south of Cambridge, this small village became famous in recent years for the Imperial War Museum, just outside the village proper and now separated by the M11 motorway. The former RAF airfield was used as a sector section during the Battle of Britain and was home to Douglas Bader’s Big Wing.

The village itself, formerly known as Duxworth, was a populous parish split by four manors back in the time of Domesday records, one being the property of the Knights Templar. The Templar Chapel can still be visited today.

Duxford’s trade was principally arable farming, with at least 3 mills in operation on the manors at one time.

Its position along the Icknield way led to its being used as a travelling stop-off point, no doubt explaining the existence of several public houses in the village. Duxford Lodge Country House and Hotel sits on the bend of Ickleton Road, a late Victorian lodge locally renowned for its restaurant cuisine and wedding/conference facilities. St John’s church beside the village green dates back to the 12th Century.
