About Church End

Ashdon, the name meaning ‘hill of the ash trees’, has a history stretching back to ancient times. There are traces of a Roman village near its borders and Ashdon itself is a contender for the mysterious site of the Battle of Assandun in 1016, the outcome of which enabled Cnut to claim the throne of England, and has been argued over by historians for years!

This tiny hamlet of Uttlesford, Essex, has all but joined up with the nearby village of Stebbing and can be found in the south-west corner of the old Saxon Hundred of Hinckford. The church of St Mary’s dominates its skyline, perhaps a clue to its pretty name.
