About Barkway
Barkway village is located roughly 4.5 miles south-east of Royston town, on the eastern edge of the Chiltern hills. Barkway’s history stretches right back to prehistoric times, when it was the site of a major trading route and crossroads. As time passed, it became, like its neighbouring town, a popular stop on the London to Cambridge coaching route.
Though a lot quieter these days, the village is well known locally for its annual fete, the Barkway Market, which always draws a good crowd. It also has the Barkway Park golf and country club to the rear of the village, on the Nuthampstead road. Cokenach estate and cricket club lies along the Barley road at the opposite end of Barkway, with the impressive Newsells Stud Farm nestled in the adjacent rolling countryside.
