About Ashdon

Ashdon, the name meaning ‘hill of the ash trees’, has a history stretching back to ancient times. There are traces of a Roman village near its borders and Ashdon itself is a contender for the mysterious site of the Battle of Assandun in 1016, the outcome of which enabled Cnut to claim the throne of England, and has been argued over by historians for years!

Like many of the north-west Essex villages, Ashdon was an agricultural establishment for most of its life. Bragg’s windmill, built in 1757 by a village carpenter named William Haylock, still sits on the hill and is currently undergoing restoration. The church, All Saint’s, dates from the 13th Century. The village also has a Baptist church, founded in 1809, as well as Marpa House, a Buddhist retreat established here in 1973.

Ashdon has suffered in recent years from flooding of the River Bourn, where its boundaries lie, around 6 miles north-east of Saffron Walden. Despite this, village population remains high, at approximately 792 at the beginning of the new century, and community spirit is evident in its two village cricket teams, football and bowls teams.
