About Arkesden

Situated 7 miles south-west of Saffron Walden in the district of Uttlesford, this small village has a current population of around 360 souls. As well as St Mary’s church, dating from the 13th Century, it also boasts a village hall on the church green along with a public house, the Axe and Compasses. St Mary’s houses an elaborate monument to the Cutte family, original owners of the manor house, Wood Hall. The Cuttes were famous for quite a few things, including John Cutte, born in Arkesden, and his part in the Battle of Blenheim, which earned him the moniker of ‘The Salamander’ for his bravery. The village has a number of old properties and thatched cottages, especially along the Wicken water stream, including ‘The Old Maltings’, built in the 17th Century. Wood Hall, the manor house, dates back to 1652 and stands on the site of an original Saxon manor referred to as ‘Wodehall’ in the Domesday Book. A mile-long walk edging the parish boundary between Arkesden and Clavering villages follows woodlands with such names as Horsepasture and Nomans Grove, an ancient landscape where a lucky seeker uncovered a treasured hoard of Bronze Age artifacts, now on display in local museums.
