About Little Walden
Nestled 3 miles north of Saffron Walden and 12 miles from Cambridge lies the small quiet hamlet settlement of Little Walden. The remains of a banked enclosure here are thought to date back to the Iron Age.
The Crown Inn sits on the bend of the B1052 road running through the village, which is a mix of old and new buildings, with St John’s church being Little Walden’s centrepiece. The present hall here dates from around 1800, though the house called ‘Thatched Cottage’ dates back to 1700.
The World War II airfield to the north of the village, known as RAF Little Walden, was closed in 1958, and the Petlands Estate built nearby to meet the post-war housing shortage. The airfield is not a place locals would perhaps venture to after dark, as it is said to be haunted by the ghost of a headless young airman. Little Walden Park, the hunting grounds for former lords of Walden manor, was one of 150 deer parks in medieval Essex. But owing to the development of the RAF site, much of its ancient history was erased.
