About Little Chesterford

This small village and civil parish of Uttlesford, Essex, sprang up along a single sunken lane to the east of a tributary of the River Cam. Little Chesterford is 5 kilometres northwest of the market town of Saffron Walden, and still relies for most of its amenities on its close neighbour, Great Chesterford, though it does have its own church – the church of St Mary – dating back to the early 13th Century. Little Chesterford’s population has changed little over its existence, standing at around 200 people today.

On the hill to the east of the village lies Chesterford Park, a 25-acre estate and mid-19th Century mansion which now also holds a science park, known as Chesterford Research Park. With the outbreak of World War Two, the park and mansion was requisitioned and used as a hospital and grounds for ammunition dumping. This led to a huge series of explosions in May 1944, which could be heard as far away as Ely, some forty kilometres distant.
