About Great Chesterford

In the Uttlesford district of Essex, located 12 miles south of Cambridge and 50 miles north of London, you will find Great Chesterford.

A medium-sized settlement, the village grew up on land inhabited for centuries and has yielded many precious finds from ancient ancestors, including Bronze Age beakers, Belgic pottery and Roman artifacts. The Romans, in fact, built a wall around the then town, remains of which have now been found and excavated.

The medieval village development revolved around its centre; All Saint’s Church dates from around the 13th Century. By 1635, Great Chesterford had become an important staging post for the Newmarket Races, often used by King Charles I.

Nowadays, its situation puts it close to the major A11 road and it has its own bus services and railway station for local commuters. The Crown is its main public house, situated on the winding hill road into the village centre.
